CancerCancer is linked with poor diet, environmental factors and stress. One third of all malignancies are related to food. Adhering to a low-fat, high-fiber, low-alcohol diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole-grain bread and cereals will lessen the risk. Avoiding smoking, alcohol, high animal fat and excessive weight are the main focus in cancer prevention. Improving the immune system is also important in minimizing the opportunity for cancer cell development. Green tea can prevent cancer and heart disease. Mushrooms, rich in minerals and vitamin D, can lower the cholesterol of meat when cooked together and can improve digestion. Soybean and related products, such as soybean sprouts, can prevent and eliminate cancer. In Chinese food treatment, a well-balanced diet, which promotes the health of the vital organs and the normal production of body fluids, is most important. Any deficiency or abnormality in body fluid level can trigger abnormal cell development and tumor growth. Blood and qi tonic, kidney tonic and foods high in antioxidants can prevent cancer. Antioxidant foods, tonics to promote blood circulation, diuretic foods to expel dampness and blood clots are all used to treat cancer. Sea cucumber is used to treat skin cancer. Fish maw or fish stomach is to treat stomach or digestive tube cancer. Monkey-head mushroom treats stomach and colon cancer. All cancer patients should eliminate chicken from their diets because it benefits the growth of cancer cells. Soy products, garlic, green onion, tea, sea wheat, kelp, red bean, mung bean, apple, apricot, winter melon, carrot, lotus roots and especially turnip, are all good for preventing cancer. For patients receiving chemotherapy and suffering from destructive side effects, eating fresh and rejuvenating foods can restore the normal functioning of the weakened parts and improve the immune system to prevent relapses. Foods high in protein, such as pork, fish and egg, and fresh vegetables and fruits, which are high in vitamins, are best for improving digestive functions, promoting the production of blood and qi and tonify the kidney. Avoid eating fatty or deep fried food, over burnt meats, preserved foods, spicy and highly processed food. Eat smaller meals to avoid over eating. Smoking and drinking should be eliminated. In treating patients recovering from cancer, lifting blood and qi tonics should be used to restore energy and to strengthen the body.
